Registration and stud bookkeeping - North Swedish Horse

For the North Swedish Horse, stud bookkeeping occurs at four years of age or older. This applies to both stallions and mares. The horse must be registered in section 1 of the Grundstambok. Approved colours are brown, blackish-brown, black, chestnut, golden brown, cream-coloured, yellowish-black and drab variants of these colours. Bleached dapples of colour are allowed if they can be traced to the so-called "blue colour" in Norway. For both stallions and mares, measurements are to be taken for size from withers to front hoof, chest size, carpus size and front shin width. The stud book is published each year by FNH.

Stallions
For a stallion to be approved for breeding, both the father and mother must be registered in the stud book. Stallions are listed with the breeding valuations from the spring. Three year old stallions can also be listed and are approved for one year if they meet the requirements. Stallions undergo a veterinary examination, exterior assessment (where they must achieve at least 40 p, of which no subpoints under 7 are allowed) and must carry out a performance test on site. In order to be approved, the hooves must also be X-rayed and be free of lateral cartilage ossification. Once the stallion has been approved for breeding and has carried out its perfomance test, it is assigned breed value class AB. If the stallion produces quality offspring, its breed value class can be increased to A or ELITE.
The stud book number for stallions is made up of four digits.

Mares
Mares are presented for stud book registration during summer assessment. The mare is to have given birth to a foal from an approved North Swedish Horse stallion. Most often, the mare is shown where she had her first foal, often at four years of age. The mare must be awarded at least 30 p for its exterior, with no subpoints lower than 5. The mare shall also carry out a performance test at the assessment location. The mare is then assigned breed class B. If she has competition merits or has passed the test for FNH's driveability certificate in combination with at least 38 p. for her exterior, the mare can be assigned class AB. The class of a mare can also be increased to A or ELITE if she produces quality offspring.
The stud book number for mares is made up of five digits.
